Oats are credited with be one of the best nurse crops we’ve discovered in the cover crop industry. They are quick to establish and do an excellent job of suppressing weeds as the main cover crop becomes established. They protect the young cover crop from the elements and allow it to become established before the oats winter kill. Their rapid growth makes them a great tool to use to prevent erosion in the fall and creating bio-mass on the surface to assist with erosion prevention. They also are capable of capturing many nutrients quickly in the fall. However due to their winter kill they may not be able to completely hold all the nutrients until desired for the release into the established cash crop the following spring.
